Factory vs Trading Company – Can You Tell the Difference?

Your supplier says they're a factory, their Alibaba profile says "Manufacturer," and their website shows beautiful production lines. But are they really a factory, or just a trading company? And more importantly… does it even matter?

Watch the short — Factory vs Trading

You
Trading Co. (Middleman)
Real Factory

One of the biggest mistakes buyers make is assuming every supplier owns the machines. In reality, a massive percentage of Alibaba "manufacturers" are middlemen. Sometimes, that’s actually fine. The key is knowing exactly who you're dealing with so you can negotiate properly.

1. What is a Factory?

A factory actually manufactures the product. They own the facility, manage the production schedule, and control the quality directly. Working with them can mean lower prices and better technical control.

PROS: Lowest price, direct technical communication, easier custom molds.

CONS: High MOQs, poor English communication, narrow product focus.

2. What is a Trading Company?

A trading company doesn't make anything. They buy from various factories and sell to you. Many buyers think this is bad because of the "middleman markup," but a good trading company offers immense value.

PROS: Lower MOQs, wide product variety, excellent English, handles the sourcing headache.

CONS: Higher prices, slower technical feedback, less control over the actual factory.

3. How to Unmask Them

If a supplier claims to be a factory but you suspect they are a trading company, use these three verification tactics:

TacticHow to do itRed Flag
The Business LicenseAsk for their Chinese license. Look at the "Business Scope" (经营范围).If it only says "Sales/Wholesale" and not "Manufacture/Production".
The Video CallRequest a spontaneous WeChat video call from the production floor. They make excuses: "It's too loud", "The factory is in another city."
The Product RangeLook at their entire Alibaba catalog. They sell phone cases, dog toys, and LED lights. No factory makes all three.
"The best partner isn't always the factory, and the worst isn't always the trader. What matters is honesty. If they lie about being a factory, what else will they lie about?"
