Key Insights for SCM Leaders

  • 1Landed Shipping Fees: Always calculate total landed cost, not just factory price.
  • 2Customs Duties & Taxes: Factor in unexpected border taxes based on product codes.
  • 3Defects & Inspections: Quality problems cost much more than a simple inspection.
  • 4Cost of Delays: Time is money. Missed seasons can destroy profits.
The Hidden Costs Nobody Talks About When Importing From China.

You find a product in China for $3, calculate your profit, and think you're going to make a fortune. Then the shipment arrives, and suddenly, your profit is completely gone. Why? Because the factory price is only the beginning.

Many new importers focus only on the unit cost. But experienced buyers know the real cost of importing goes far beyond the product itself. Let’s break down the hidden fees that catch people by surprise and how you can map out a true landed cost model.

1. Landed Shipping Fees

Ocean or air freight is just one part of the journey. You also have local trucking (from the factory to the port in China), warehouse handling fees, port terminal fees, and delivery from your local port to your warehouse. A cheap product becomes incredibly expensive if you don't calculate the total landed shipping cost before paying the factory.

Cost ComponentTypical RangeWho Pays?
Origin Trucking$100 - $400FOB (Supplier) / EXW (Buyer)
Ocean Freight$1,500 - $3,500+ / containerBuyer
Destination Handling$300 - $800Buyer

2. Customs and Duties

Did you check the HS Code? Import taxes can range from 0% to 25% or more, depending on your product and country. If you don’t calculate this upfront, your entire profit margin could be wiped out by Customs.

"The biggest mistake is assuming your product falls under a generic 0% tariff code. Customs agents disagree."

3. Exchange Rates & Bank Fees

International wire transfers cost money. PayPal charges huge currency conversion fees. If the exchange rate shifts 3% while you’re manufacturing, you just lost 3% of your profit. You must factor in payment costs into your landed cost formula.

What to Do Instead

Before you order, ask your freight forwarder for a DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) quote, or calculate your full landed cost:

Landed Cost = Product Cost + Shipping + Duties + Bank Fees + Insurance.

If the math still works, buy it. If not, walk away.
