How to Spot Fake Suppliers in China: Vetting & Due Diligence

Every year, importers lose thousands of dollars to fake suppliers in China. They look real. They have a website, a catalog, even samples. And then — they disappear with your money.

Fake suppliers are everywhere — and they're getting more sophisticated. Here are the red flags you need to spot before wiring a single dollar.

1. Trading Companies vs. Real Factories

The most common scam isn't outright fraud — it's deception. Many "factories" on Alibaba are actually trading companies with no production capacity. They inflate prices, outsource your order to unknown factories, and have zero quality control.

How to check:

Ask for their business license and match the company type. A real factory will say 生产型企业 — manufacturing enterprise.

2. Zero Friction is a Red Flag

If a supplier responds instantly, accepts every condition, and never pushes back on price — that's a warning sign, not a green light. Legitimate factories have lead times, minimums, and limitations. Scammers tell you exactly what you want to hear.

"Trust friction. Real factories negotiate."

3. Three Steps Before You Pay Anything

  1. Verify the Business License: Request their business license and verify it on China's national enterprise database — qichacha.com or the official government credit system.
  2. Do a Video Call: Ask them to walk you through the factory live on video.
  3. Use Inspection Services: Use a third-party inspection service before the first shipment.

The Golden Rule:

No verification, no wire transfer. That's the rule.

4. Last-Minute Payment Detail Changes

Never pay via Western Union or personal bank account. Legitimate suppliers use company accounts — always. If the payment details change last minute — stop everything. That's the oldest trick in the book.
